Critical Question- How much does Youth and Adult offenses differ?

Critical Question- How much does Youth and Adult offenses differ?

(I switched due to the fact that I felt the question was unanswerable)

The Oxford Dictionary states that an Offense is…

“A breach of a law or rule; an illegal act”

As many of us know offenses are committed every day, from simple acts such as stealing a candy bar to serious acts as murdering a person. Both acts have extremely different consequences. According to (kidshealth.org), shoplifters may be arrested and paraded through a store in handcuffs, they may face charges for theft and they may be banned from stores or malls. Murder would most likely lead to jail and will go on some sort of record.

A young offender normally commits very different offenses than what an old offender would commit.

According to (thejusticegap.com), young people would normally commit crimes such as…

  • Possessing Alcohol
  • Being found drunk and disorderly in a public place
  • Possessing and using drugs
  • Theft, such as stealing a car or shoplifting or even mugging
  • Carrying a weapon
  • Criminal damage
  • Driving without a license

According to (sociology.about.com) adults would normally commit crimes such as…

  • Murder
  • Aggravated assault
  • Rape
  • Robbery
  • Theft
  • Carrying a weapon
  • Prostitution

These are just a few examples for both the Young and Adults.

On Friday my group went out for the whole day. They had completed two types of interviews and had surveyed many different people. What they had ended up with was very interesting. Many people thought that Young offenders only committed crimes such as shoplifted or driving without a license. This was in some way correct, because these types of crimes are committed. The interesting thing here though, is that they had no idea about what other crimes they commit.

After some serious thought I had decided what I thought on this matter. At first I thought that, of course the crimes committed by young people would be tiny compared to the crimes committed by adults. When I found out what the surveyed people thought, I believed I was correct. After my group informed me on what the interviewees said, I was shocked, appalled even that people the same age as me could commit murder or even rape. This information had drastically changed my thinking on the matter and I immediately thought that, no actually adults and the young commit the same amount of crimes. Yet again I was wrong and was happy to read that, no adults commit much more crimes than young people do and that the offenses adults commit are much more different to what a young person would commit.

Now I believe that Youth and Adult offenses differ quite differently and the adults have a much higher rate of crime commitment than what a young person has.

Options Week Reflection

This week was a really interesting week with quite a lot of turn. For one I realized I am quite good at being a leader and organising our group so we work efficiently and that we really did a good amount of work. I also saw that my planning skills are pretty good, but I don’t think I would have been as good if I was working alone. Maybe I would have been really good working alone, but maybe I would have been an absolute train wreck.

I also realized that I shouldn’t stress as much as I do about our group and how much we get done in a session, and that if I am not there, no work would be done at all. I think my group performed absolutely amazing on Thursday and we got everything handed in, even though we stayed back for like five minutes, but I think that was because someone was photocopying about 50 pieces of paper.

On Friday I was extremely worried about how my group would work, since I was not there. I was really worried that they would be late for the interviews and that no work would be done, and no people would be surveyed… I know it’s a bit dramatic and stupid, but I am serious, I actually thought nothing would be done. I was relieved when Calypso called me and told me that the interviews had gone really well and that they had already surveyed about 6 people. Since this drama has happened I have got more trust for my group members and feel quite good about everything now.

Unfortunately I was unable to attend school on Friday, and that meant that I missed out on the Trail, this for me was my low light of the Options Trial. The highlight I think would have to be that my group did well without me there and that they got a good deal of information. I really think Calypso was quite good this week; she had done the tasks that I had asked her to do. Reem had done most of her jobs except for a few. I feel as if I had also done my tasks, but I don’t really know and that will probably be judged by them. I really hope they didn’t mind that I was unable to go to school on Friday and that they feel I have contributed to the group.

So basically in short I think that my group has done really well and I am proud of them.

Critical Question- Is music just a source entertainment or is it much more than that?

Critical Question-

Is music just a source entertainment or is it much more than that?

The Oxford Dictionary states music as: Vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.

The Google Dictionary states music as: The art or science of combining vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.

Many people have different views for this question, some people think that music is a great therapeutic use which can change your emotions, and others think that music is simply there to keep you busy on the long train rides to and from school. I believe I already know what I think of music, but for the soul purpose of this, I will not state what I believe music is.

According to a forum music has been around for a very long time. Apparently the Big Bang was a beat, which actually surprised me quite a bit. Also on the forum it confirms that cavemen did create music, it may not have been the astonishing opera that we have today, but it was defiantly noise created in a harmony, which both Dictionaries state is music. For the cavemen, music might not have meant anything to them and did not change their feeling, but we will never know this for sure.

On Wednesday last week, we had a music trail, and on that trail we visited a Music Therapy session. The woman then gave us instruments and told us to play different feelings, these feeling were: Happy and Angry and they all sounded extremely different. The lady then explained to us how music can change how someone can feel, and she told us that if you are feeling depressed listening to certain music can make you fall further into depression, while listening to other music can lift you out of depression. Basically what she means is that music can change the way you feel, it can make you feel happier, sadder or the same in some occasions. This concept of music being able to change your emotion and thoughts is very strongly backed by both the Oxford and Google Dictionaries.

Thementalmind.com states that “It has been proven by scientists that music helps people relax, release stress, inspire, and motivate us.” This yet again is strongly backed by both the dictionaries that I have said before.  According to a different website called soundscapemusictherapy.com music can help you sleep. It states that “Music is one of the factors that can improve the length and quality of your sleep.” This is interesting though because a different website named boards.ie music can bad to use to go to sleep since it can interrupt sleep patterns, make it difficult to fall asleep and even claims that without music you cannot sleep since you are used to hearing a certain song or melody.

I had my mind made up from the very start that Music is much, much more than just a source of entertainment. Music is used to express yourself and your feelings, and for many people is the only way they can let off steam or relax or even just forget about something for a while. I love listening to music and I feel that my attitude, my feelings and thoughts can be changed simply by listening to music; I also know that many people can determine what type of person you are, by simply looking at what songs you listen to. So, to sum it all up, I will say that No, music is not just a source of entertainment and Yes, it is much more than that.

Week Eight Reflection

I only knew a small amount of people in 9S2. Most of them were because I was a friend with a certain person and so I was introduced to them… Though over the course of Galileo, I feel that I have gotten to know the people in 9S2 much better than I ever would have if I were not doing Galileo. Galileo has really made 9S1 and 9S2 much closer in my eyes and I believe that because of Galileo we will always have this trust and understanding for each other. At the start of Galileo, I really wished that 9S1 and 9S2 did Galileo separately and not together, but now I am so happy that it wasn’t split because I made new friends and I am happy because of that, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I really enjoyed being able to choose what our Theme was this week. It makes me feel like I have a lot of control over my learning in Galileo, and I am happy that this week I was able to choose my theme again. I think that being able to choose your own theme is also quite good for the teachers, because they will choose what they want to do and they will be surrounded with children that are interested in the theme as well. I also believe that because a student has chosen his/her topic, they can’t complain about it or hate the teacher for “Forcing them to do something”, since they chose it for themselves, and if they chose it because of peer pressure, well that their fault. Basically what I’m trying to say here is that I love being able to choose my own theme.

For the first time I actually feel really confident about our Team Project. We are getting everything completed and everyone knows what job they have to do, and we all work together and listen to each other extremely well. I mainly think this because a partner from our left and ever since this person left we have been doing much more work than we were doing when this person was here, even the group agrees with me on this. I think ever since the Mini Trail presentation our group has changed a lot. Of course one of our team members has left, but I think that this will benefit the group more than expected. I really think our behaviour to everything has changed, but this might just be because I am more comfortable with them now, since I am the only S1 if our Team Project group. Either way I am extremely happy about how our team works together now, and of course I feel sorry for the person that left, but like I said, I think that we have improved a lot more ever since the person left.

Critical Question Feedback

My Critical Question Feedback was from Reem.

I was given full marks from Reem, but I wasn’t given full marks from Tamar.

Two ways I can improve my Critical Question Feedback is…

  1. Stop repeating my facts. By this I mean that once I make a point, I should not return to it or say it multiple times. Reem and Tamar have both told me that this makes my argument less professional and that it would be much better if I did not repeat myself.

  1. Make a decision in the end. In my “What makes a joke funny” I didn’t really have a good ending. My ending could have been easily changed and people could easily convince me to change my end decision.
